“Should we use WordPress or Shopify?” is one of the most common questions we get. The honest answer: it depends on what matters most to you.
The short version
- Choose Shopify if selling products is the main event and you want something simple, reliable and low-maintenance.
- Choose WordPress (with WooCommerce) if content is just as important as products, or you need flexibility and full control.
Ease of use
Shopify is built for selling. Adding products, managing orders and running promotions is straightforward. Hosting, security and updates are handled for you.
WordPress is more flexible but needs more looking after: plugin updates, hosting and security are your responsibility (or your agency’s).
Content and SEO
WordPress started as a blogging platform and still leads on content. If you publish lots of articles, guides or resources, it’s hard to beat.
Shopify handles product SEO well and has a blog, but it’s more limited for content-heavy sites.
Costs
Shopify has a monthly subscription, plus transaction fees unless you use Shopify Payments, plus paid apps for extra features.
WordPress software is free, but you’ll pay for hosting, premium plugins and maintenance.
Over time, the costs often end up closer than people expect. The difference is how you pay.
Flexibility and ownership
WordPress gives you complete control. Your site, your server, your code.
Shopify is a hosted platform. You own your content and data, but you work within Shopify’s rules and ecosystem.
Growth
Both scale well. Shopify handles high traffic easily without technical worry. WordPress can scale too, but needs good hosting and optimisation.
Our take
For product-first businesses that want to focus on selling, Shopify is usually the easier path. For businesses where content, custom features or full ownership matter more, WordPress tends to win. Plenty of businesses could thrive on either.
