Picking a web design agency is a bit like picking a builder. Pretty photos of past work are nice, but what you really need to know is how they work, what’s included and what happens when something goes wrong.
Here’s what to ask.
“How do you start a project?”
Great agencies ask a lot of questions before they design anything: about your customers, competitors and goals. If the first thing you’re shown is a template, that’s a sign strategy isn’t part of the package.
“Can I see work similar to mine?”
Look for projects with similar goals, not just similar industries. A site built to generate leads is a different beast from an online store or a membership portal.
“Who will I actually be working with?”
Will you speak with the designers and developers, or only an account manager? Will the work be outsourced? Neither is necessarily bad, but you deserve to know.
“What exactly is in the quote?”
A good quote is itemised: design rounds, pages, features, content, SEO basics, testing, training and support. Vague quotes lead to “that’s extra” conversations later.
“Who owns the website?”
You should own your domain, your hosting account, your content and your website files. Get this in writing.
“What about SEO and accessibility?”
Every professional site should launch with basic SEO in place and be built with accessibility in mind. Ask how they handle both.
“What happens after launch?”
Who fixes things if they break? Who updates plugins? How quickly do they respond? What does it cost?
Red flags
- Guaranteed Google rankings
- Very low prices with no detail
- Pressure to sign quickly
- Reluctance to give you account ownership
