Search “logo design” and you’ll find prices that range from almost nothing to many thousands of dollars. So what’s the difference?
What drives the price
Research and strategy. A cheap logo is usually designed without knowing anything about your customers or competitors. A considered logo starts with understanding what makes you different.
Number of concepts and revisions. More initial ideas and more rounds of refinement take more time.
Designer experience. Experienced designers solve problems faster and avoid common mistakes, like logos that fall apart at small sizes or can’t be embroidered.
Deliverables. A single PNG is very different from a full suite of vector files in every colour version and format you’ll ever need.
Usage and rights. Make sure you own the full rights to your logo. It sounds obvious, but not every service guarantees it.
What you should receive
At minimum, a professional logo package should include:
- Primary logo, plus horizontal or stacked versions
- An icon or symbol version for small spaces
- Full colour, one colour and reversed (white) versions
- Vector files (AI, EPS or SVG) for print and signage
- PNG and JPG files for everyday use
- Basic colour codes and font names
Logo vs brand identity
A logo is one piece. A brand identity is the full system: logo, colours, typography, imagery, graphic elements, tone of voice and guidelines. Start-ups often begin with a logo and grow into a full identity. Established businesses usually benefit from the full system.
Is cheap ever OK?
For a side project or test idea, maybe. But if you’re building a business you plan to grow, your logo will be on everything for years. It’s worth getting right.
